Creative Wall Cabinet Ideas

Wall Cabinets:

I’ve been house hunting the past two months, and I’ve seen my fair share of awkward spaces over home cabinets.

I’m going out on a limb here by saying that loading that space with accessories just because it’s there is a bad idea.

If you’ve got high ceilings and a couple feet above the cabinets to work with, you have more options to create some interesting vignettes. But it should fit your design strategy – not just be filler.

So I thumbed through my “inspiration folder of kitchen ideas from my favorite design magazines.

However, if the wooden enclosure is not made from the best of woods, then you might consider painting your cabinets. By choosing a painted finish, the color and design options for the home cabinet will increase. Following are a few creative ideas for painting your cabinets.

Hints and Tips

Paint

1. Buy white emulsion as you can use this to mix up with your acrylic paint, to make lots of different shades, at half the price.

2. Flies stuck on newly painted surfaces .
Don’t try and pick the flies out of the wet paint. Leave the paint to dry overnight and the flies can be wiped away with a damp cloth next day often without any trace.

3. After you’ve used all that glitter on your Christmas cards, don’t just put it back into the drawer until next year, mix it in with clear varnish and paint over sections in your mural, all of a sudden seahorses sparkle and there’s a milky way in your space scene.

4. To save re-plastering a room, paint over the existing wallpaper in white or cream paint. If it’s still up the next day, then you can just paint your mural right over the top.

How to Paint Wall

From the ceiling, cut a strip 2 inches with a brush.

Continue with the brush to cut in 2 inch strips in corners, around windows, doors, cabinets and baseboards. Note – there are tools available at your paint retail stores contribute to this edge work easier.

Other “tricks” include sliding the roller cover holder slightly so that the edge rolls over near the ceiling, windows or doors.

Switch to a roller and paint in a vertical direction using a zigzag pattern. Push the roller upward on the first shot, then form an “M” pattern to evenly distribute the paint on the roller (work in sections of 3 m is recommended).

Fill out the “M” pattern without reloading the roll until you have full coverage of the area. Continue this procedure until the wall is finished.

Touch up spots you missed when the paint is wet will help minimize the potential differences in gloss.

Self Home Repair: Insulation

Insulating your home is the best way to conserve energy and cut down on your heating and cooling expenses. If your home is older than 15 years, it is most likely not properly insulated. The US Department Of Energy has standards of R-Values, and these are guidelines that are taken into consideration, with the information that is stated below.

Attic

With new technology, we have come a long way in recent years regarding insulation. For the attic, now we have the choice of fiberglass, which is laid in manually. Or blown in insulation, which is usually shredded paper (very user friendly). When you buy this type of product, they will usually rent you a machine, that will blow this material into your attic. Be sure not to block any exterior vents. If you have recessed lights in your ceilings, and they are marked (insulation contact), you may insulate against then, if not than you must keep the insulation at least 5 inches away.

Exterior Walls

If your exterior walls are not insulated, it might be a costly project. You have the choice of either, blowing in insulation from the outside, and having to patch and then paint your siding or stucco.
